Brian Blade scores at Grammy's with Chick Corea (2024)

UPDATE:

Chick Corea Trio took home two Grammy's for improvised jazz solo and best jazz instrumental album for "Trilogy." Making up the trio is lead vocalist Chick Corea, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Brian Blade. Blade, a Shreveport native, was also nominated for best jazz instrumental album for "Landmarks." Blade joined Chick Corea on stage to accept the award for "Trilogy."

"First thank you, to you Chick Corea," Blade said in a backstage interview with The Recording Academy. "I want to thank my wife Lurah for her faith in me and love, and my family, mother and father."

Jo-El Sonnier from Lake Charles, Louisiana, won a Grammy for best regional roots music album for "The Legacy."

A few familiar faces will be in the crowd at the 57th annual Grammy awards. Brian Blade, Bobby Rush and Jesse Winchester are northwestern Louisiana artists on the list of Louisiana musicians nominated for a Grammy.

Brian Blade & the Fellowship Band are nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Album for "Landmarks" (Blue Note). Brian Blade is a Shreveport native and an internationally acclaimed singer, songwriter, drummer, and composer. "Landmarks" was released in cooperation with Shreveport-based Mid City Records and distributed globally through Blue Note Records.

Seven of the 10 compositions from "Landmarks" were recorded at Blade Studios in Shreveport, founded by Brian's older brother, drummer and producer Brady Blade Jr.

Chris Bell, chief engineer, producer and mixer for Blade Studios, worked with Brian Blade to record "Landmarks."

"It's always exciting to work on a Grammy-nominated album, but this was really exciting because it was the first record that we did on our new label Mid City Records," Bell said. He said the album was recorded using analog tape opposed to digitally, a technique rarely used post-1970s. "None of the audio went into the computer," Bell said. "We recorded live with the musicians together in the room. We knew it would sound better."

He said the outcome was a purer sound "with all the dynamics and the harmonics."

Bobby Rush, from Homer, is up for Best Blues Album with Blinddog Smokin' for Decisions (Silver Talon). This is Rush's third Grammy nomination.

"Just to be in the running and to be involved is meaningful," Rush said. "It makes me feel like a winner already."

Jesse Winchester, from Bossier City, is nominated for two awards for Best American Roots Song and Best Folk Album. Winchester died in April.

No matter who walks away with a Grammy, Louisiana comes out on the winning side as its musicians continue to make impact in the music industry.

Bell believes more Grammy-nominated songs recorded in Shreveport will encourage other musicians to record in the city.

Bell, who has lived in Shreveport for four years, was surprised to learn the amount of music history in the city.

"It would be great to bring that back," Bell said. "Maybe this is a sign of a comeback."

Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne will host the "Only in Louisiana" luncheon at the Conga Room in Los Angeles on Feb. 7. Dardenne said the luncheon is to pay tribute to the Louisiana's legacy, food and music, and to promote Louisiana. The Louisianan Grammy nominees will be recognized.

"This is the ninth year we have hosted the luncheon," Dardenne said. "It's gotten bigger over the years."

Dardenne said those from the music, movie and hospitality industries were invited to attend. He said he plans to meet with representatives of various industries and promote Louisiana while he's in California.

Dardenne said renowned guitar icon Buddy Guy will be in recognized at "Only in Louisiana." Guy is receiving the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award during the Grammys. Dardenne said Chef John Besh will team with Wolfgang Puck to prepare the Louisiana-style cuisine.

"Four of the nominees will perform: Ledisi, Magnolia Sisters, Jo-El Sonnier and Bonsoir, Catin," Dardenne said. He said five additional acts are scheduled to perform.

"Not since 1960 and 1970 did Louisiana not have at least one artist nominated for a Grammy," Dardenne said. "And usually it's double figure."

There are 11 Louisianans nominated for a Grammy with additional artists from the state who were involved in the production of the nominated projects.
